It's been a long time since I decided to write about this subject, particularly after seeing "Héroes", 2nd episode on TV.
Anyone knows history has been redacted by the "winners", as a way to bury, erase and forget their enemies or rivals. Or, most often diminishing, denying or hiding others' achievements.
Even when these lines don't qualify as an apology to José Miguel Carrera (and his legacy), I think there's something that I should demonstrate: we forgot Carrera, and currently, his figure is, still, absent in several simple things.
Let me show you a few little examples.
These days we have O'Higgins' face on front of $1.-; $5.-; $10.-; and $50.- chilean coins. There isn't any dedicated to Carrera. But our $1.000.- bill remembers his grandson Ignacio Carrera Pinto.
In my city [Valdivia] doesn't exist José Miguel Carrera street; and maybe almost anybody knowns that there's a little alley way named "Los Carrera" in honor to the four brothers [Javiera, José Miguel, Juan José and Luis] as a group. In the other hand there're in Valdivia a central street, a square, and a neighborhood named O'Higgins.
Los Carrera street is a very important artery in Osorno city, but there isn't any José Miguel Carrera street. And this city has a Libertador Bernardo O'higgins street too.
Puerto Montt city is an exeption, it has an alley way in honor to José Miguel Carrera, also a Carrera street, and of course the Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins street too.
I know there' re José Miguel Carrea streets in Santiago [a street, and a great avenue], Valparaíso, and Buenos Aires. Anyways I'm afraid they are insufficient, whether we make the same exercise about O'higgins, or even San Martin.
That's it! we're what our fathers told us to be. But our children... post tenebras lux
